Abstract

The European’s success in trade and their advancement in industry which result in their hegemony over economy, finance and trading sphere in the whole of the world, caused a number of Iranian merchants to relinquish their traditional solitary engagement in business and to get together collectively to bring about new investment portfolios in order to benefit from small-scale capitals. They chose to find trading and financial companies as a solution to the problem of economic incursion of foreign capital into the country; of which one can take Islamiyeh Company as an example. The Islamiyeh Company headed by Mohammad Hossein Tajer Kazerooni was one of the most important trading companies in Isfahan which had also established branches in different cities all over the country. There were groups of intellectuals and clerics in Mashhad, Shiraz, Bushehr and some other cities who actively cooperated with the company. The company also tried to expand its activities beyond Iranian boundaries to Russia and Caucasia, and also published its goals in newspapers. Despite all these efforts this particular company and all other similar companies were not successful at what they had aimed to achieve. This essay based on printed material, newspapers and some documents tends to make a review and analysis of activities and efforts made by the Islamiyeh Company.
